Bill Detail
An Act respecting the recognition of wartime service
This enactment provides for the development of a national framework for the recognition of certain military service as wartime service and for the designation by the Governor in Council of military service as wartime service if it meets the objective criteria set out in the national framework.
Bill S-246, the Wartime Service Recognition Act, aims to create a national framework to officially recognize certain military service as "wartime service." This framework will establish objective criteria, based on the risks and hardships faced by service members, to determine if specific periods of service qualify for this recognition. The goal is to provide fair, consistent, and meaningful symbolic and commemorative acknowledgement for the sacrifices made by Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans, separate from financial benefits.
This bill will affect current and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces, as well as potentially non-Canadian Armed Forces personnel who served alongside them. The Minister of National Defence is responsible for developing this framework in consultation with veterans, experts, and other stakeholders, and will report to Parliament on its implementation and effectiveness.
