An Act respecting a national framework for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
This enactment provides for the development of a national framework designed to support Canadians with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, their families and their caregivers.
Bill S-234 proposes to create a national framework to support Canadians affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This lifelong disability impacts individuals' brain and body, causing varying challenges in daily life. The framework will aim to improve diagnosis, prevention, and support for individuals with FASD, their families, and caregivers across Canada.
The framework will be developed by the Minister of Health in consultation with various government departments, provincial/territorial representatives, Indigenous communities, and relevant stakeholders like medical professionals and support groups. It will include measures for training, education, research, awareness campaigns, and national standards. The Minister will report to Parliament on the framework within 18 months and evaluate its implementation within five years.
