This enactment amends the Corrections and Conditional Release Act to, among other things,
This bill, also known as Tona's Law, aims to improve conditions for individuals in federal penitentiaries, particularly those in structured intervention units (SIUs). It mandates mental health assessments for individuals entering penitentiaries or SIUs, and restricts confinement in SIUs to 48 hours unless authorized by a superior court. The bill also allows for community groups and Indigenous organizations to provide correctional services and support for release and reintegration, especially for marginalized populations. Additionally, it provides a mechanism for individuals to apply to court for a sentence reduction if there has been unfairness in how their sentence is administered.
