Bill Detail
An Act to establish a national framework to promote the durability of electronic products and essential home appliances
This enactment provides for the development of a national framework on the durability and repairability of electronic products and essential home appliances. It also sets out reporting requirements respecting the framework.
This bill aims to create a national plan to make electronic products and essential home appliances last longer and be easier to repair. It acknowledges that Canadians spend a lot of money replacing these items too soon and rely on them daily. The goal is to protect consumers, lower household costs, and encourage a more responsible economy by making products more durable and repairable.
The plan will involve setting standards for how long products should last, how they can be maintained and fixed (including access to parts and information), and how long software will be supported. It will also ensure consumers are informed about these standards and clarify the responsibilities of manufacturers, importers, and sellers. The Minister of Industry will develop this framework in consultation with provincial governments and consumer groups.
