An Act to establish a national framework to improve food price transparency
This enactment provides for the development of a national framework respecting grocery pricing and unit price display practices. It also sets out reporting requirements in relation to the framework.
Bill C-226 aims to create a national framework for grocery pricing and the display of unit prices. The goal is to help Canadians make more informed decisions when buying food and other household items by making pricing clearer and more consistent across the country.
This framework will involve developing national standards for how grocery stores show unit prices, ensuring they are accurate, easy to understand, and accessible. It will also require more transparency about price changes. The Minister of Industry is responsible for developing this framework and reporting on it to Parliament within 18 months, with a review of its effectiveness to follow within five years. This affects all consumers shopping for groceries and the grocery retail sector.
