Bill Detail
An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying)
This enactment amends the Criminal Code to provide that a mental disorder is not a grievous and irremediable medical condition for which a person could receive medical assistance in dying.
Bill C-218 proposes to amend the Criminal Code of Canada to explicitly state that a mental disorder cannot be considered a grievous and irremediable medical condition for the purpose of accessing medical assistance in dying (MAID). This bill aims to prevent individuals with mental health conditions from being eligible for MAID, emphasizing the importance of mental health supports and suicide prevention counselling for vulnerable Canadians.
The legislation reflects Parliament's concern that allowing MAID for mental disorders could normalize assisted dying as a solution for mental health struggles. It seeks to ensure that those experiencing mental health challenges receive appropriate care and support rather than MAID.
